About us
Tiakina Te Taitokerau is a community-led conservation initiative focused on empowering urban communities across Te Taitokerau (Northland) to take action for nature — right where they live, work, and play.
The name Tiakina means “to care for” or “to look after” — a guiding principle for our work in urban environments. We support people to protect, and celebrate the natural spaces woven throughout our towns and cities.
Urban conservation is at the heart of what we do. From backyard pest control to removing pest animals and plants from urban reserves, we’re helping to build a movement of everyday guardianship. Our goal is to:
- Support communities to lead local conservation efforts
- Enhance native biodiversity in urban areas
- Increase environmental awareness and education
- Strengthen the connection between people and place
By working together, we can transform our urban spaces into thriving habitats — where nature and people flourish side by side.
Our supporters
Tiakina Te Taitokerau is proudly funded by the Northland Regional Council with support from the Whangārei District Council and the Far North District Council. While we’re a community-led initiative, we’re grateful for the support we receive from our partners.
