Predator Free Onerahi project underway
Efforts are underway to establish a unique project, working towards a Predator Free Onerahi project – exciting times! We know this is a long term vision, but we believe Onerahi has got what it takes!
Onerahi was identified as a great flagship project because there are existing conservation groups within the area and the schools and early childhood centres / kindergarten have established environmental initiatives. Another huge benefit is that Onerahi is a peninsula, so it can be defended against re-invasion, and there are significant forest fragments flanking the suburb, meaning that the conservation outcomes for biodiversity would be very high (i.e. more birds everywhere!)
Following an initial meeting in November (thanks to Raurimu School for hosting!), we’re hoping to formalise this project in the coming months. We’re keen to hear from anyone in the Onerahi area who is keen to be involved. Please contact me at info@tiakina.org.nz for more info, or come along and see us at the Onerahi markets on Saturday 4 April to learn more.
We already have some amazing conservation projects happening in Onerahi at Dragonfly Springs Wetland Sanctuary and Matakohe Limestone Island, so we’re hoping to build on these projects as well as efforts from backyard trappers to create a sanctuary for our native flora and fauna.
We expect this community-led project to result in some awesome conservation, educational and social benefits and have been inspired by similar projects in places like Miramar in Wellington, which is now completely free of rats!
