Helping nature thrive in the city

Tiakina Te Taitokerau is a community-led urban initiative that’s all about communities, kaitiakitanga, conservation, and connection.

We support urban communities across Northland to get involved in local conservation efforts – whether by joining existing projects or starting new ones. By working together to remove pest plants and animals, Tiakina Te Taitokerau volunteers are helping to protect and enhance native biodiversity in our urban environments.

Our urban projects

Launched in 2018 with funding from the Northland Regional Council and support from the Whangārei District Council, the Tiakina Whangārei urban project is a community-led initiative with agency backing. Since its beginning, the project has empowered hundreds of local volunteers to protect and restore native biodiversity across our city.

Get involved

With support from Tiakina Te Taitokerau, urban communities across Northland are taking action — protecting native species by tackling pest plants and animals in their backyards and beyond.
